Unique outdoor opportunities for you and your event are available with Iowa DNR outdoor educators located at the Resort. Programs are open to the general public and are presented year around. Special programs for family reunions, church groups, youth organizations and others can be accommodated.

Weekly/Daily Programs

Please contact Honey Creek Resort at 877-677-3344 to find out what programs are available and to sign up for an interpretive activity. DNR programs are for any age, free, and open to the public. Most programs last an hour or less, unless otherwise noted.

Interpretive Programs and Activities for Friday, November 14 - Sunday, November 16

Friday, November 14 - 7:00P.M.
Wild Edibles Fireside Chat: Meet our DNR Interpreter in the lobby between 7:00 and 7:30P.M. to enjoy a hot cup of Indian lemonade and to learn all about delicious, nutritious, not at all fictitious wild edible plants.

Saturday, November 15

2:00P.M.
SLIME Creations: Join us in conference room F to make gooey, oozing slime! Fun for all ages!

5:00-6:00P.M.
Preparing for Winter; The Animal Way: Come by the lobby between 5:00 and 6:00P.M. to learn how animals survive the winter. Great for kids! 

8:00 P.M.
Family Movie Night: It doesn’t get any better than family fun on a Saturday night! Join us in conference room F. Snacks will be available for purchase.

Sunday, November 16 - 8:00A.M. -10:00A.M.
Breakfast with Buzz the Bee: Join us at Rathbun Lakeshore Grille! Buzz will be present from 8:00A.M. to 10:00A.M.  

Following are descriptions of future programs to be held at Honey Creek Resort State Park

  • Rock the Creek - interactive games and fun activities designed to introduce kids to the cool habitats at Honey Creek . Themes will include animal adaptations, predator-prey relationships, invasive species, and others as they relate to the weekly theme. 

  • Playground Rove - a staff member will be stationed at the playground to present short talks and just talk to the kids and families about topics related to the weekly theme 

  • Hiking Day and Night - Scheduled guided hikes will take place, some in the day and some at night - topic to be discussed related to weekly theme 

  • Let’s Go Creekpackin - This is an exploration activity that will be done every other Saturday for visiting families. They will have a guided 1.5 hour program that gets them using binoculars, field guides, magnifying glasses, fishing poles, etc… Then the families can check out their own Creekpack full of activities and supplies to explore the lake area on their own.

  • Moonlight Hikes - Every full-moon night we will offer moon walks and star talks starting at the site where the activity center will be and walking all the way to the first overlook which should be far away from any light pollution at the lodge.

  • Tales by the Campfire - Every Friday evening at 7PM there will be scheduled programs relating to the weekly theme. Multiple programs could be delivered on the same topic that night to hit multiple areas (lodge, campground, Honey Creek State Park campground).
